Social distancing has become a household term worldwide. It is common knowledge that people should maintain a 6-foot distance between individuals and wear a mask to reduce the spread of coronavirus. But, what if you are preparing to reopen your business? Did you know current requirements call for no more than 50% occupancy in facilities? And, what are the best practices for protecting your employees and customers?

Since we are in the business of cleaning and maintaining healthy work environments, we wanted to share some advice. We hope these tips will help you get off to a safe start as your business prepares to reopen.

  • Advise employees to limit the sharing of objects, and discourage touching of shared surfaces. In instances where this is unavoidable, such as workstations, countertops and doorknobs that are frequently touched, implement a disinfecting routine. Encourage employees to wear gloves or sanitize their hands before and after contact with frequently touched areas.

  • Routinely clean and disinfect work areas after every shift, at a minimum (and more frequently as needed). High transit areas, such as payment devices, pickup areas and restrooms should be cleaned and disinfected more frequently. Use cleaning and disinfecting agents to clean, following the directions on the label.

  • Provide disposable wipes so that commonly used surfaces (for example, doorknobs, keyboards, remote controls) can be wiped down by employees before each use. Provide tissues and no-touch disposal garbage receptacles for use by employees.

  • Maintain cleaning logs on-site that document date, time, and scope of cleaning. In the event of a positive case, you should have a plan for cleaning, disinfection and contact tracing.

  • Provide and stock hand hygiene stations for personnel, including handwashing with soap, water, and paper towels. Where handwashing is not feasible, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing 60% or more alcohol should be available. Ensure adequate supplies are maintained, and place hand sanitizer in multiple locations to encourage hand hygiene.
